I had a WLE about ten years ago followed by chemo and radio and I am now in the all clear. The breast on which I had the surgery has now gone quite hard inside with red skin on the surface and an increase in size that has made me extremely lop sided. I have had a mammogram and an ultrasound and am assured it is nothing sinister just (just !) scar tissue and have to put up with it. It gets uncomfortable and as it is surrounding my nipple that gets irritated too. Has anyone experienced similar and what did you do?

Hi - I used these forums a lot when I was going through Breast Cancer some ten years ago. I had a WLE which left me with a scar that began life as being underneath my right boob. I had chemo and radiotherapy but have been all clear since then. I have now developed a lot of hardening inside that breast with some visible reddening of the surface of the skin. This has had the effect of pushing my scar and my breast forward, surrounding my nipple and making me extremely lopsided. At my request I have had a mammogram and an ultrasound to check this out and I have been reassured that it is nothing to worry about as it is just scar tissue which they imply I will have to put up with. However, it gets very uncomfortable and I find my nipple gets a bit irratated. The question I want to find the answer to is how common is this and is there really nothing that can be done to disperse it, short of an unnecessary mastectomy! I want to go back to the GP and so 'do something' but I want to know what (if anything) could be done HELP
