Re: Recommended caseload number

I haven't heard about Cassandra, it sounds interesting.

The other tool that is useful for CNS activity is Somerset. It is capable of presenting several work load charts with a really good breakdown of CNS activity.

Re: Recommended caseload number

Hi

It's an activity analysis tool for specialist nurses. You'll find it at www.apollonursingresource.com

It is a really helpful resource as it talks about job planning etc. The Cassandra App is under the subheading of 'how I spend my time'-you'll need to gather between 70-hours of data and then input your figures at the end which then generates pie charts as to your specialist activity. It demonstrates the complexity of the role and it wasn't too time consuming.

Re: Recommended caseload number

Hi again

This figure is for both - each CNS should have no more than 100 new referrals per annum. I take your point about existing case load numbers, as did my manager when we spoke about it, and she thinks some reduction in numbers may follow in time for other tumour sites as well as lung, to reflect the fact that our case loads can continue to grow each year due to the nature of the disease.

Thanks Ruth

That's great-is that for primary & metastatic?

I knew lung was 80

I guess the difference with breast is that our existing caseload won't deplete at the same rate as lung so this doesn't really seem comparable

Thanks Catherine

That would be great

I have downloaded the Cassandra App which is great for demonstrating specialist intervention but it doesn't help with numbers of patients unfortunately

Re: Recommended caseload number

Hi

I could remember my Cancer Lead Nurse saying something about this recently and have just checked with her. She tells me that there should be no more than 100 new referrals per CNS, per year - but this is on top of the existing caseload. Apparently they have just revised this number for Lung CNS, to no more than 80 new referrals. Hope this is helpful in some way....not sure if anyone else has any other info?

Re: Recommended caseload number

I think its because its a new (ish) role plus of course we don't have accurate numbers of patients, as well as measuring the complexity of your role to work it out. There's a complicated sum which one of our team circulated some time ago to try work it out, I'll try find it!

Recommended caseload number

Hi all

I am in the process of gathering data etc for a service review as my post is currently a secondment. Does anybody know what the recommended caseload number of patients should be per for a full time nurse specialist? I have managed to find caseload recommendations for lung cancer but not metastatic breast?

Many thanks

Justine
