Re: period and contraception

Dear Rosh

Thanks for posting.

It’s really difficult to say if and when someone’s periods will return after breast cancer treatment as this varies so much from woman to woman.

Periods can return when someone is on tamoxifen but they don’t always or they may return but be lighter and irregular.

Even if periods don’t return it is still possible to become pregnant so contraception should still be used.

I’m unsure if you are wondering about future fertility. If so our information here might be helpful.

At Breast Cancer Care we have a number of services and support designed specifically for younger women. This includes a two day free residential event called Younger Women Together.

You can find out more from the above link or by calling our Helpline on 0808 800 6000.  Alternatively you can contact our team who co-ordinates these events on 0345 077 1893. You can also register your interest for a specific event online.

If you would like to talk with another young woman diagnosed with breast cancer who understands, you can use our Someone Like Me service.

The Younger Breast Cancer Network (YBCN) is a private Facebook group run by young women for young women (under 45) who’ve had breast cancer. You can join if you have a Facebook profile. They’ll explain how to join if you private message them.

Our mobile app BECCA might also be of interest. It provides day-to-day strategies, hints and tips to help someone move forward after breast cancer. The easy-to-use cards give bite-size information on everything from managing menopausal symptoms to strategies for coping with anxiety. Categories include exercise, mindfulness and beauty, and you can also read blogs from people like you who are adjusting to life beyond breast cancer treatment.

You can download BECCA for free from Google Play and the App Store. If you don’t have a smartphone, you can use the online version. Do call our free, confidential Helpline if you would like to talk this through or have any further questions. The number is 0808 800 6000.

Our opening hours are Monday to Friday 9am - 4pm and 9am -1pm on Saturday. Out of hours you can leave a message and we will call you back when we next open.

Please be aware that we will be closed on Friday 29 March and Saturday 30 March due to an office move. This may cause a slight delay in our response times especially for forum posts received from Friday 29 March to Monday 1 April. Thank you for your patience during this period.

We are currently reviewing our Forum service and wonder if you would have five to 10 minutes to complete a short survey. The survey will help us gather information about this service and understand more about any improvements we can make.

Best wishes

Jane
