Re: Worried

Hi Kitsnugs

Thanks for posting.

Nearly everyone who has been treated for cancer worries when they experience a new symptom that won’t go away, so you’re not alone in being anxious about this. The uncertainty and fear of breast cancer returning is very real.

Symptoms such as pain in the hip can happen for many reasons, and often can be due to referred pain from the back due to muscle, joint or nerve pain. For some people the pain is linked to their breast cancer treatment, but for most their symptom will be completely unconnected to their cancer diagnosis.  However, it’s important to get it checked out to find the cause as you’ve done.

Although you are a BRCA carrier, this on its own does not increase your risk of breast cancer returning.

It sounds as if it would be a good idea for you to get back in touch with your treatment team to explain your situation.  As specialists, they are the best people to assess your symptoms thoroughly and to ask for specific advice about your situation. If you are still in contact with your breast care nurse, you can phone to ask how to do this. You may need to get your GP to make a referral so an appointment can be made.

As you are anxious, it may be helpful for you to call our free, confidential Helpline to talk this through or ask any further questions. The number is 0808 800 6000.

Our opening hours are Monday to Friday 9am - 4pm and 9am -1pm on Saturday. Out of hours you can leave a message and we will call you back when we next open.

Best wishes

Catherine

Worried

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in August 2013. I had a mastectomy and LD flap followed by chemotherapy.

For the last few weeks I've been experiencing horrendous pain in my hip.

A GP at my medical centre suggested it might be bursitis. She sent me for an x-ray of my hip which she said wouldn't show up bursitis but she wanted to make sure it wasn't anything else.

Since then I've seen a specialist physiotherapist at Wythenshawe hospital and she said it definately isn't bursitis and said the hip pain is a referred pain from my back.

I've now had an x-ray of my back and am currently waiting for the results.

Until I've received these I am feeling more than a little anxious.

I'm struggling to walk up and down the stairs and walking any distance is a real problem

As I carry the faulty gene I have had further surgery that is my other breast removed and the removal of my ovaries and fallopian tubes.

I'm hoping you might be able to reassure me a little. Thank you
