Re: Deodorant and underwired bras

Hi Drummerswidow

Thanks for this post.

There is no medical reason why you can’t go back to wearing an underwired bra after surgery for breast cancer, and a number of women do. But whilst it’s best to avoid wearing an underwired bra while the area is recovering from surgery for comfort, there are other reasons why wearing an underwired bra may not be suitable.

Many women find that an underwired bra does not hold their prosthesis (if they use one) comfortably, and choose a non-wired bra for this reason.  Others find that the wires are uncomfortable especially if they sit against any healing scars.  You can find out more about bras and prosthesis in our booklet on Breast prosthesis, bras and clothes after surgery

There is no specific advice to follow about the use of deodorants following treatment for breast cancer.  Some people choose to use products free of aluminium salts or parabens, however there is currently no scientific evidence that supports the need for their use to be avoided.

Deodorant and underwired bras

I’m getting mixed advice or none at all! I’ve had a mastectomy and lymph node clearance. I perspire a lot and wondered which is the best deodorant to use. I’ve also been told I can’t use deodorant at all! With summer coming it will be a smelly one for me if that’s the case!

I have also been told that I can never wear an underwired bra again but no one tells me why! Any advice please?
