Re: Breast lymphodema symptoms

Hi Mishy. Appointment went well thanks. Consultant was delighted and doesn’t want to see me again. Had a bit of a down day yesterday more with frustration of finding a comfortable bra!

You sound so similar to me. My effected breast was much smaller than my other breast - I’m also have ample proportions! The mastectomy side used to swell to the size of my normal breast.

I don’t think breast lymphoedema and it’s effects are understood and as you say not really discussed as a side effect of radiotherapy.

It wasn’t until I sought specialist help that I found a medical professional who really understood what I was going through.

I’m not considering reconstruction but I am thinking of a breast reduction but it’s not offered on the nhs in our area. Email to MP with campaign from breast cancer now has been sent.

I hope you are getting on ok.

Best wishes. Xx

Re: Breast lymphodema symptoms

Hi Flossie i hope your app went well and everything is healing as it should be, i think you are really brave going through this so long after original dx and surgery etc but 5 geats is a long time to suffer they underplay how painful it is when then talk you through possible long term issues from radiotherapy im surprised how soon after my treatment ending it has happened its really painful i have big boobs to start with even with my surgery boob being smaller its still big with the swelling i hope the things they have given me work, i will be seen in a couple of months but if i have any problems in the meantime i can just ring
Will you be opting for recon, kr are you apprehensive after your experience with the lymphodema Flossie i wish you well with whatever steps you take xx

Re: Breast lymphodema symptoms

Hi Mishy, I’m glad you have been seen. The compression bras are truly awful but hopefully wearing it will help you.

I’m going to the hospital this afternoon to see the consultant for results and dressing off. Am hoping there will be no nasty surprises!

Are you being reviewed again?

Best wishes x

Re: Breast lymphodema symptoms

Magsta, It seems a bit quick for lymphoedema symptoms, have you got an infection? X

Re: Breast lymphodema symptoms

Mishy my breast was quite red and painful and when I saw the lymphoedema expert he thought I had a grumbling cellulitis so put me on long term antibiotics. Might be an option? X

Re: Breast lymphodema symptoms

Thank you, I think I’m doing ok! Have 2 trips to the hospital this coming week.

I found that the basic massage I used to do wasn’t enough to control my breast lymphoedema. The lymphoedema nurses used to do a deeper hivamat massage which worked well but the effect didn’t last long. I also had kinesiology taping which helped. I also tried compression bras and something like an egg box stuffed in my bra!

It’s quite difficult to treat.

My skin didn’t dimple but I had a lot of swelling.

Best wishes x

Re: Breast lymphodema symptoms

My breast has that appearance and feels thick and lesther but only on one side you can also see ridges which must be the fluid i am seeing a lymphodema physio this Monday coming i have no swelling in the arm but it does feel heavy and sort of nerve type pain but my breast is really painful and quite red x i will keep you posted how i get on x

Re: Breast lymphodema symptoms

I had an SNB just over a week ago. And only last 2 days had pain in breast. Near the nipple is now an area of soreness. It also feels a bit hard. Does anyone know if this is the start of the dreaded lymphedema? I'm worried now. Only had 2 out. Both being positive. 😢 and due to have a clearance at time of masectomy.

Re: Breast lymphodema symptoms

Hi Mishy. I will be interested to hear how you get on at the lymphodema clinic. I had a WLE with full axillary clearance in Oct 2017. I was diagnosed in April with lymphodema in my hand, lower and upper arm and breast. I have had a sleeve fitted but when I asked about the breast I was advised that the best course of action is massage (which I do twice a day). My breast feels like hard leather and has an orange peel look. I will ask again at my follow up in October if anything else is available for the breast.
I hope Flossie that you continue to improve X

Re: Breast lymphodema symptoms

Thank you. I feel breast lymphoedema gets overlooked, trying to find information and help is very difficult. Please don’t hesitate to ask if you need some support (me or health professionals- although I resorted to google!). ! Xx

Re: Breast lymphodema symptoms

Hi I have lympodema 4 months after radiotherapy . I felt sore and my skin was thick like Orange peel. Bcn referred me to lympodema clinic and I have massage there every  two weeks and wear a  compression sleeve daily. At first I was worried about the sleeve just another thing! But I've coped very well with it and I massage myself each day too. The nurse at clinic , who is amazing,  says I can choose when to wear sleeve now as things are looking and feeling so much better. I hope you get this sorted soon. It's all doable but another thing to get through. Lots of love and best wishes x

Re: Breast lymphodema symptoms

I get quite marked by the end of the day. I wear a prosthesis to balance and it leaves loads of marks over my breast. I was told my lymphoedema was related to my radiotherapy. I was diagnosed in 2010 and have had breast lymphoedema for about 5 years. Good luck.
