Re: October 2017 Chemo Starters

Hi all been reading up on you all ready for my first chemo tomorrow booked in for 8.30 am
You all share so much of your lives and treatments I feel like you are all friends/family
Throughout this crap process I feel like this site provides a light in what could be a dark time
Just got out from seeing endocrinologist said no treatment needed for swollen adrenal glands waiting for urine test results but will only be called back if anything untoward xxx

Re: October 2017 Chemo Starters

Yes I can identify with everything you said. Wake up feeling a bit better, try a walk and meet up for coffee/do a bit of work and then crash back in bed asleep for an hour or watching Greys Anatomy on TV with a headache and stiff neck. I keep getting a cold head/hands so am wearing my skiiing hat permanently round the house!! I am not loosing head hair yet but I haven't dyed it since June so it is dreadful and I am not washing it very much so it's doubly dreadful!! Ha! Need to go hat shopping this weekend!! By the way (glad we are all girls on this forum....) my pubic hair started falling out in handfuls yesterday....oh well thats one less job to do ...tehehe! Has anyone heard from their breastcare nurse? I spoke to her at the hospital on chemo day and she phoned me the next day but that has been it....? Any thoughts/comparisons? I had only met her once before when she outlined the likely chemo process but that was at the start of September! Not that impressed with her....and she told me we would soon be best friends...! Lol hugs to you all Cx

Ruth you must be in the carriage behind me. I'll pop in and say hi on my way to the buffet car lol.

Claire, we're in the same chemo train carriage! I seem to have a good day when I feel normal and then a couple of days feeling tired. Got a headache today too. Went for a walk this morning to try and blow away some cobwebs but it didn't seem to work. Been working from home this morning so that's been taking my mind off it.

Re: October 2017 Chemo Starters

Hi Cassie,
I've got chemo 2 next Thursday too - I hope you are starting to feel better. Trying to make plans for fun things to do each day til then to make the most of a "normal" week. I'm still quite tired though. I'm eating well and that helps so it's just headaches and tiredness that I'm suffering with now.
Sam - I had damage to my liver following the post surgery antibiotics which I found I was allergic too. I discovered that garlic, beetroot and carrots were all good liver clensers so you could try eating/ juicing them?

Re: October 2017 Chemo Starters

Morning everyone finally have my dates. Gave up waiting and tracked down the number to the chemo unit! (Apparently the info is in the post! Great!)
In Tues (PICC), Weds (bloods) and chemo starts Thursday.
Cassie looks like I will be one cycle behind you on the chemo train!
Checked they do have the cold cap available - although encouragingly the nurse on the phones comment was "I don't know how you ladies do it"! So that was encouraging!!
Huge amounts of positive energy to everyone starting tomorrow 🤞🤞🤞

Re: October 2017 Chemo Starters

I was lucky enough to be offered a meal at the hospital after my chemo (whilst waiting for cold cap to finish) which I ate all of and then had homemade soup in the evening. I didn't really feel that sick in the following days so just reduced the size of my normal meals slightly and munched on a couple of ginger nuts if I felt a bit sick in between. I did find also find if I was late with my evening meal then I started to feel worse. Obviously everyone is different but that's what seemed to work for me.

Just found out that I can have the flu jab as long as I do it towards the end of next week. So have booked it in for next Thursday. Smiley Happy

Well done Meesh on the promotion good to know that you are valued Smiley Happy
Tingling not too bad this morning, it came and went yesterday and was bad during the evening yesterday. Keeps me off my phone though so probably a good thing. I spent the evening reading the latest Good Food magazine which I’ve had for nearly 2 weeks and not opened. Starting to get excited about Christmas cooking. I have chemo 5 due on 27th December so want to enjoy Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Apparently I will have to spend the whole day in the department that day because bloods and oncologist appointment will be done then too.
Best of luck to everyone starting tomorrow. My piece of advice would be don’t get overexcited and try to eat a normal evening meal on your treatment day, it did not end well for me 🤢 and echo the comments about drinking plenty. I don’t think that I drank enough on the day itself because my treatment was quite late I was keeping busy and didn’t make time to drink.

Re: October 2017 Chemo Starters

Hi everyone. Just checking in and seeing if everyone is ok.
I'm not doing too bad. Started to get really bored so working from home. Lots of friends and family have colds so not getting many visitors :-(
Planning on seeing a few people this weekend and have my Look good feel better course on Monday which I'm really looking forward to.

I think we have a few new chemo starters on Friday like SueW. Someone called it a chemo train. I like to think more of a rollercoaster. However not one of the really scary ones at Alton towers. More of a big dipper that takes you up one minute and then down the next. Make the most of the 'up moments but don't over do it. Rest on your 'down moments which is what your body is telling you to do. And advice to drink plenty is also good especially if your appetite is a bit off.

So step up to the ticket office and get your ticket for the next chemo roller coaster ride. Mine takes off again next Thursday.

Have a good day

Re: October 2017 Chemo Starters

Morning everyone! Still feeling good after yesterday, although woke up at 3:30am and then couldn't get back to sleep!

Hope chaffinch and Sam are feeling better today.

New starters for tomorrow, I agree with Karana make sure you drink plenty of water today, tomorrow and then the day after. I did do that and I think it really helps. I didn't really suffer from any loss/ change in taste but did find water was the only thing I really wanted to drink. Also I would recommend not eating anything you really love during or just after chemo as you may never want to eat it again (I've gone right off ginger, although ginger nut biscuits are still ok Smiley Very Happy Also try to rest up today too.

Morning ladies hope you all had a good night x

Hows your tingling today Chaffinch?  Sam are you feeling any better?  Meesh hope your still on a bit of a high 😊

Hope tomorrows starters aren't getting too nervous....remember to drink lots before you go and during the day...I definitely didn't drink enough and paid for it so will up my intake of water next time!!  I struggled drinking bottled water as it tasted really metallic and eventually realised that tap water tasted fine...weird as I never drink tap water!!!!! Re: October 2017 Chemo Starters

Evening everyone! Hope you all had good days.

Sam34, good to hear you are out of hospital, hope you're feeling better soon.

I've had a good day today! I did my yoga and meditation again when I got up this morning, not sure if this is helping but I didn't feel anxious or shakey. I popped into work for 2 hours as I had an interview for a promotion, it was good to see a few people and show my face. They called me this afternoon to let me know that I got my promotion which I was really chuffed about as I was worried they may overlook me. It's also the first bit of good news I think I've had since my diagnosis!

Re: October 2017 Chemo Starters

Sorry to hear that you had to go to hospital Sam34. I hope that you feel better soon.
I’ve still got this annoying tingling in my fingers and sometimes around my head particularly on my lips. Hopefully it won’t stay because one of the pleasurable things that I have promised myself is to do some of my adult colouring books this winter!
Otherwise not a bad day, afternoon better than morning even did some ironing and cooked the tea!

Hi everyone, hope you all had a positive day.
I just saw this on my twitter feed and thought it might be interesting to share following our posts about looking after nails. I went to their website and it is pretty expensive stuff but seems it is worth knowing about.
Nail related quality of profoundly improves with polybalm - UK RCT reveals conta.cc/2ym3Xsi
Or their website is http://polybalm.com/buy-polybalm/

Still waiting and waiting to know what is happening when - it is sending me a little loopy, but decided to book in the chop for my hair anyway - next Tuesday morning. Fingers crossed it will fit in with everything else! Teeth done today so slowly working through the great to do list I have picked up from you wonderful ladies.
Wishing everyone a peaceful night.

Re: October 2017 Chemo Starters

Sam34, sorry to hear you ended up the in hospital and that chemo affected your liver. Try not to worry, it may mean that they just need to adjust your treatment. The liver is able to regenerate itself so maybe that's why they're going to check it again before your next treatment?

Karana, I've also been really nervous about planning anything! I'm avoiding booking anything for definite and have been a bit like that since my diagnosis. I have a couple of Xmas do's for work that I've been invited to. I don't want to say no, but don't want to say yes either. I've just told them not to book me in for the meal, but that I may turn up for a drink on the day if I feel up to it. Our friends have also invited us over for dinner this Saturday and I have said a provisional yes to that too, although I think I'm definitely going to feel up to that now.

Re: October 2017 Chemo Starters

Had my 1st cycle of chemo and ended up in hospital! I'm ok now!! but my oncologist came to see me and said the 1st cycle of chemo has showed affect to my liver and will be checked before next chemo...

What will happen if I can't carry on with treatment I'm scared!!!

Re: October 2017 Chemo Starters

Thanks SueW, I’m not having the Doxatel I’ve got 6 sessions of FEC only. I think you do get tingling with FEC but I don’t think there is the same neuropathy risk but it was that doubt that worried me last night. I couldn’t type in my phone it was so bad. I wonder if it’s because my hands had got too warm, I’ve had cold hands and feet since treatment. It’s much better this morning after a good night’s sleep I hit a wall last night after a busy day I think.
Karana don’t worry about panicking, going to the O2 would be a major undertaking at the moment and full of infection so probably just your body’s way of saying I don’t think so.
I’ve booked a small local concert in November for our anniversary and I thought twice about that, it should be in my good week and we chose seats st the end of a back row in a block so no one could sneeze on me from behind with hopefully a single empty seat next to us!

Re: October 2017 Chemo Starters

I had a really good day yesterday and hoping that will continue!  My fingers sometime feel a bit tingly Meesha but doesn't last constantly!  Does anyone else feel panicky about planning things?  A friend asked if I wanted to go and see Neil Diamond at O2 next Tues and I nearly had a panic attack thinking about it!  I'm normally very confident...as it is I can't go as hubby away but really don't think I cld have managed the traveling and the crowds!!  Am I gonna turn into a hermit for 6 months?

Hope you ladies managed a good nites sleep and those of you starting on Friday are keeping calm and drinking lots of water!! Xxx

Re: October 2017 Chemo Starters

I got my pack today from chemo nurse and it says the following
Numb or tingling hands and feet
This is caused by the effect of docetaxal
Tell your doctor if you have these symptoms and they sometimes need to lower the dose and symptoms should slowly improve after treatment is completed
Talk to your doctors if you are worried

Not sure if this is relevant to you but all I can find in my pack xx

Re: October 2017 Chemo Starters

Has anyone else got intense tingling in their finger ends and lips? I’m feeling odd tonight again after a good day, not sure if I’m just over tired. Just worried about neuropathy not sure if that is side effect of FEC or not?

Re: October 2017 Chemo Starters

Well done Sue that was really brave 😊

Meesha im just finding the thought of wearing a wig strange...was fine trying them on (although did also get a fit of the giggles) and managed to pick one a similar style to my short hair....but now I've got it I don't wanna look at it!!  Was chatting to a friend this evening who is a hairdresser who has offered to style/trim it for me so it feels more like my own but think I'm gonna wait til I need it!

Its a week tomorrow since my first lot of chemo....any ideas when the hair will start leaving me?

Re: October 2017 Chemo Starters

The first thing my wig consultant said to me was that they didn't have anything as curly as my own hair. So they let me order 2 short curly ones that were as similar to my own hair as we could find and also a straight one too. Bit worried I'll look like an old lady with the curly ones.

Re: October 2017 Chemo Starters

Oh Karana, poor you. Have you got a good friend who could help you face it? I think I'm going to have to face it Friday, they ordered 3 wigs for me so I'm going to have to try them on in order to choose. Luckily I have a friend who's coming with me to help.

Re: October 2017 Chemo Starters

I went for my wig consultation today and have ordered on which is very similar to my current short style. I did try on some crackers though. One made me look like a cross between Boris Johnson and something from a 70’s sitcom!
Spent a lovely morning at my local Maggie’s too, met some very inspiring people.
Seem to have reached the wanting to eat anything that isn’t nailed down phase too!

Re: October 2017 Chemo Starters

I'm only having fec but I'll look up the evonail, just in case! I'm nowhere near Birmingham perhaps I'll see if there is a wig specialist near me that can help.

Karana, how did you get on with your wig today?

Member

Re: October 2017 Chemo Starters

I think it's the T part of FEC-T which causes the nail issues most. I've started using a nail strengthener and painting my nails again to protect them and to stop me biting them. Annoying habit I know but something I've never been able to stop.

Well I'm on day 13 unlucky for some and certainly unlucky for my hair. Lots left in the bath and shall we say, I didn't wash the hair on my head today. At least chemo should save me money on razors.
Member

Re: October 2017 Chemo Starters

Meesh, I got the evonail in advance as the second half of my regime may cause nail damage. I'm just trying to be as prepared as possible! I have definitely become more forgetful and vague at times since diagnosis, so if chemo brain hits I'll be completely useless! :-)

Re: October 2017 Chemo Starters

Oh beautician suggested I look at a semi permanent eyebrow stain that you can get in boots - so I can put it on whilst I still have the outline of my eyebrows to follow! Am going to take a look this afternoon and pick up sea bands too.
Member

Re: October 2017 Chemo Starters

Thanks Jelly tot - Meesh I just searched for evonail and found it on the live better with cancer site.
Flu jab done and dentist tomorrow. Also spoke to a lovely beautician who said I need two weeks b4 chemo to get blading done 😤 As you said why don't they tell you these things?!

Re: October 2017 Chemo Starters

I didn't think fec was as tough on the nails as some of the others, is it? I haven't prepared for nails! Where can you buy the evonail?

Re: October 2017 Chemo Starters

Hi ladies, just popping in - so good to see Ali that you're home!

I'm on Day 15 now and feeling generally pretty good. The normal days will come, honest.  Hair beginning to shed now, but since my first short chop made me look like a wrinkly escapee from a boy band, I'm content with it going.  Only wish it were spring, and then I could bung it in the garden for the birdies to make nests!

I bought my stick on natural hair eyebrows ready x
Although I have got tattoos I was scared to try micro blading in case it hurt x

Re: October 2017 Chemo Starters

I wish I'd got my eyebrows microbladed, as well as having the flu jab and going to the dentist! I also wish they'd advise you about this stuff whilst you're waiting to find out if you need chemo. I waited for ages through the various tests and then when I was told they said I'd be starting the next week so too late for flu jab, dentist and microblading by then!

Claire-bell glad to hear you've had 2 good days in a row!

Re: October 2017 Chemo Starters

Hi everyone, two good days in a row! Wow that feels good- I'm on day 12 and it's my husbands birthday so I am up and have made a cake and eggs on crumpets(birthday breakfast in our house) for the family who are all off today (INSET Day!) yay! We are going out for afternoon tea later and to play TopGolf and I feel so relieved to have some normality! I have not lost any hair or eyelashes or eyebrows and my hand and toe nails are looking amazing even with no varnish! (Got scared of using it because of the chemical risk - look on breast cancer research website under risks) - phew ladies at least we know there will be a good week in every three! Hugs to you all for what you go through today - just take it one day at a time - tomorrow could be betterSmiley Happy xxxx

Re: October 2017 Chemo Starters

As well as running a pub I'm also a nail technician and done a bit of research re nails before chemo started.  I've deceived to carry on putting gel on my own nails, they recommend using a dark colour, I worked on the assumption if I was gonna lose hair, eyelashes and eyebrows I'd quite like to keep my nails!!! Really wish I had my eyebrows micro bladded but by the time I had looked into that it was too late 😬 but it will be something I will consider after treatment if they are a bit sparse!!  I've always had quite easy to maintain full eyebrows and think I'm gonna look like an alien without them!!! xxx

Re: October 2017 Chemo Starters

So glad to hear you're home Ali, rest well!
Ruth and mrsrims I read about Evonail on here and have been using it for a few days as I normally have acrylics but had to get them removed. It coats the nails and hopefully protects them from damage but time will tell. Have also had my eyebrows microbladed , it's expensive but lasts a year . Unfortunately you have to get it done before chemo due to the infection risk. Am just keeping my fingers crossed re eyelashes but there are things others have suggested if you search on here (this web site is brilliant!). Tried cold cap on yesterday at pre ass, my hubby thought it was great as the chin strap was so tight I could barely talk lol! Don't know if I'll cope with it but it's worth a try. Hugs to all xx
