Re: May chemo starters 2018

Can you imagine going through this in the winter months, particularly if like me you get depressed anyway as the nights draw in! Day 4 of cycle 3, it’s been ok so far but can feel things getting worse so not looking forward to tomorrow. On the positive side I am somehow finding it more manageable because I’m understanding my side effects more. Is anyone else feeling that? I’ve stopped panicking that something is or isn’t ‘normal’ which was hell in cycles 1 and 2!

Re: May chemo starters 2018

Hi all

Sarah I hope you're feeling much better now 😊. It certainly is a roller coaster of emotions. I find I cry every time someone is kind and sends me a gift or texts me to say they're thinking of me.

Ok weekend for me. Even managed a lovely walk in the woods today and lunch in a pub garden. Bit more energy now in week 2 and should hopefully improve as the week goes on. Mouth less sore than last time so far which is good..fingers crossed. Not looking forward to even more fatigue next time though in cycle 3. Don't even want to think about cycle 4 and the change of drug with Herceptin thrown in!

Hope you all have a good week this week and good luck to those whose next cycle is this week xx

Re: May chemo starters 2018

Another beautiful day here on the south coast. Think the sunshine helps my down moments.
Sarah - I hope you are feeling emotionally stronger today- I think I was sort of prepared for physical se but definitely not the emotional rollercoaster and I’m only on cycle 2!! End of week 2 and feeling good at the mo, even went cycling with family yesterday😊.
Tracey- enjoy daughters skydiving - lovely day for it.
Tanya, Herts and anyone I’ve forgotten(apologies)- hope Se for cycle 3 have been ok so far, especially mouth issues😖.
Enjoy the sunshine and the footie, for those watching.

Re: May chemo starters 2018

Morning ladies,

Sarah, thank you for posting, so glad you have turned a corner. I found the 2nd FEC more tiring and my 3rd is in 4 days so it's good to have some sense of what to expect from those of you have have already been there. I am already thinking ahead to having the doxitaxol but one step at a time. Enjoy the sunshine and a dose of vitamin D.

Tanya and Hets, hope the mouth issues are resolving and you are feeling better.

I am at my best this weekend as it the end of cycle 2, I have been to work all week, felt more tired that last time but enjoyed it. I am going to Swansea today to watch my daughter do a skydive for her 21st birthday (odd gift request) and then on Wednesday my daughter is doing 'brave the shave' with her boyfriend for Macmillan so a full week ahead.

Have a lovely sun 🌞🌞 day ladies.

Re: May chemo starters 2018

Hello Ladies!
Apologies for being silent all week, found this third cycle very tough emotionally.
I didn't want to post while I was feeling so wiped out, but today....hopefully...I feel I'vd turned a corner.
It's a funny thing, being half way through.
I'd expected to feel upbeat, so the shock of feeling so emotionally fragile instead came as a shock.
Apparently it's quite common to have third cycle blues!
I'd woken up with a headache, hadn't slept properly...noisy new neighbours...plus chemo was delayed by nearly two hours, so that didn't help.
I also had vein issues for the first time...bruising up the arm and a bit of "scorching" whichh is common with a buildup of fec cycles.
But by far the worse this cycle has been the continuous feeling of crashing fatigue and just wiped out.
I have had to rest every couple of hours!
The second day I must have slept 20 hours!
Very disconcerting.
Plus, my arm is bruised and a bit sore up various parts of the veins, which doesn't bode well for the next bout.
And the next bout is docitaxel, with a huge amount of steroids and different side effects, so apprehensive about that.

Sending a big hug to everyone,

Sarah xx

Re: May chemo starters 2018

Well it must have been an omen feeling down this morning before cycle 3 it took 2 hours to find a vein...hand in an out hot water, wrapped in heat blanket In the end they called for a specialist nurse to come and hey presto first time thank God so my visit today took 4 hours and my goodie bag of meds is now 2 bags instead of 1. I too suffer with sore mouth and have caphosol dispersible tabs to add to water and use as mouthwash. Benzydime mouthwash, Nystatin drops and also lansoprazole for really bad heartburn. But feeling good at the mo so fingers crossed xx

Re: May chemo starters 2018

Went to dentist today as the hospital said I should if my mouth hurts again. He did an xray and gave me some moth wash in my mouth and said to use a brush on a 90 degree angle which is tiny to get into nooks and crannies. He said to brush gently and thoroughly round gums and at the back and said there ws some food stuck but no infection. So i used the brush after lunch and my mouth bled more than before. Anyway i think i will just use warm salt water after my meal tonight. He said call the emergency dentist tomorrow if its worse which it would be if its infected. Is anyone else having problems with their mouth hurting?

Re: May chemo starters 2018

@tanya I had similar feelings. If it’s any consolation I’m finding day 2 really fine. I think it’s because things go downhill after day 3 once the steroids run out but of course that’s the feeling your brain has been left with. Hope you’ve got some lovely company to distract you xxx

Hets and Leanne, you brave ladies, well done, cycle number 3 done.
My third isn't until next Thursday.
You mentioned the sinus sensation. I didn't get it the first time but did on the second. Know what to expect on the third.
Let us all know how you are doing. Sending positive vibes xx

Re: May chemo starters 2018

@leanne17 yes went ok - like you I got the sinus pain more than I have the previous ones which is weird! No idea how you’re doing bingo though - I’m on the sofa dozing through Netflix!! And eating popcorn!! I was also given another med to stop cancer in my bones (can’t remember the name) so will see what joyful side effects that brings! May the force be with us!

Re: May chemo starters 2018

3rd cycle went ok today. Used a hot water bottle on my achy arm b4 which helped. Had a bit of sinus pain right at the end but other than that I’m half way through yay!! Got my holiday to look forward to in 3 weeks b4 my last 3 cycles.
The look good was fab. Really enjoyed and the freebies were amazing.
In bingo now so hopefully win some money for holiday 🤞 lol
Hope your all doing ok!! Xx
@hets chemo twin hope today went good for you too!! Xx

Derisina Headware is good for headbands/headscarves/bandanas & other headwear that is good value & they have a wide range of styles. I am thinking of getting a wide blue bandana plus it is free delivery to try. (https://deresinaheadwear.com/).

Re: May chemo starters 2018

@jempd thanks. Yes all systems go for 3rd cycle today. waiting for chemo is like you’re about get absolutely plastered and wake up with an awful hangover, but not have the fun that comes with having a night out, don’t you think?

@tropic_al that is exactly how I felt in cycle 2, it got v slowly and gradually better until around day 14. I’m told it will be the same for the next cycles but last longer - joy!

Well off I go to get ready for chemo - see you on the other side hahahaha

Re: May chemo starters 2018

Hi all

sory I've been away a few days. Yesterday day 6 I felt like someone had planted weights on my shoulders and head..felt so heavy. Trying to remember that this is temporary and hopefully today will be a better day. Up early as can't get comfortable in bed but at least it is less humid. I'm in the south east and they're saying it may be 30 degrees next week..yuk..usually I'd love that!

i hope you're all feeling a bit better..there's quite a group of us now and many similar symptoms..thought it might just be me swimming round in a fog. Some of you have definitely been through the wars this time.  We've got to remember how far we've come. I now have the Little book of Mindfulness from a friend to try to help with anxiety..not going so well as haven't opened it yet..maybe today! 😂

Hope the LGFB courses have been a success or I agree go elsewhere. I'm generally useless at make up so any tips helped and some of the products I now have are great..will definitely treat myself to better products in future.

Jem- the hair...I find it all a bit depressing. I had very thick hair, now thin and very sad and fragile with definite bald areas. I am wearing bandanas and deciding what to do over the next couple of weeks. I think shedding has slowed a bit but getting difficult to look at myself and see me sometimes 😒. The breast nurse yesterday thought I looked quite well..hmm..she thought I should carry on with cold cap for now. I've made an appointment to try to get a decent wig but judging how hot it is it could end up just thrown at the side. I may also look at the Seasalt headbands and buy a couple of nice scarves that I can wear in other ways too.

For those who are a bit ahead and are moving into cycle 3..good luck this week..half way!

It really is lovely to have this support as you can feel so isolated even with good friends who are off enjoying a great summer. Today I plan to try and have a positive day..even going to try to do a bit of work and gardening.

Take care of yourselves everyone,

speak soon

Re: May chemo starters 2018

Good evening lovely ladies. Not been on for a while but kept up with your posts.
Cycle 2 has been a lot harder- the low moods have been hard . Yesterday was a good turning point- at PICC line flush discussed how terrible I’d been - appears I was suffering side effects from metaclopromide- will change for next cycle. Off to see surgeon tomorrow to check on reconstruction - all appears to be good, let’s hope he thinks so. It’s a 2 hour drive each way so Hubbie and I will treat ourselves to lunch- will just have to be outside.
Tropic-al - how’s your hair? I’ve lost about 40% and looking very thin and sad for itself☹️. Shedding appears to have slowed - has yours?
Joandbadilthedog- I think we must be the same chemo day - Tuesday last week?
Leanne - how was LGFB course? Agree with Herts that it was good to chat to others. Not sure I’ll use everything in the bag, green colour calming might help! Hope tomorrow goes ok.
Melsy- hope your arm was better today after chemo. Is that last FEC for you?
Herts- is your next cycle a week later? You’ve been through such a terrible week, hope you are all OK now.
Sarah - how are you doing today? Sea salt bands look good - thanks for suggestion.
Take care all, someone posted in another thread that we should see chemo as our friend! In a bizarre way agree, maybe I’ll feel better after finished!

Re: May chemo starters 2018

Thanks for the tip shi will definitely do that. Had bloods yesterday and nurse had to wiggle the needle around to get blood out and arm was very sore again. 3rd cycle tomorrow can’t wait to be half way through!!! Xx

Re: May chemo starters 2018

Shi, Thanks for tip to use heat pad at home too. I'm going to try that. They give me one at chemo as well as soak my arm in hot water but my arm was really tender this time and my vein was raised and painful all the way up to my elbow!

Re: May chemo starters 2018

Hi Leanne, ask them for a heat pad to put on your arm as they give you the chemo and also have one at home, those microwaveable ones are good and rub some inruprofen gel in a bit too, not too much mind it will help 💕💕✨✨Shi xx

Re: May chemo starters 2018

@joannebasilthedog thanks. Hospital told me 80% of time they find out it’s nothing and send you home but the nurse who was assessing me said she’s seen 2 patients die because they ignored early signs. So next time I won’t hesitste! @mustardandgrey I hope you’re ok. I’m a bit like that (burst into tears in the middle of the pampering session today!). But I’m also dosed up with antidepressants due to ptsd BEFORE I got BC so not sure if the cycle 3 blues which my oncologist warned me about are going to hit me. @melsy68 thanks. I’ve bounced back quickly. I’m constantly amazed how you can feel ‘normal’ one minute and out of it the next. I’ve mentioned it before, but if any of you are booked on the pampering course but are having to wait a long time, I would consider booking a £30 makeup session at somewhere like bobby brown or Mac. You get to spend £30 on product so you are basically getting a free makeup lesson if you buy £30 of product. Not for everyone but you should learn all the basics of makeup that you will learn on the pampering session. Still worth going on the pampering session because you meet others, get top tips, and free product, but just mentioning it if you are already bald and have to wait a number of weeks before your free session - the confidence boost you will get from knowing how to do makeup is huge. And let’s fece it, most of us who are past one or two BIG birthdays have never really been shown how to do makeup or use anything more than a bit of powder, mascara and lipstick! ☺️☺️☺️

Re: May chemo starters 2018

Hi everyone, sorry to hear some of you have had a bit of a tough time lately, but all things considered I think we must all count ourselves lucky at how well we're all doing.. We're one mighty strong group of women, lets keep this up!
I sincerely hope you're feeling much better Hets, sounds like you have been through it. and Sarah I hope you're back being positive and upbeat.
Leanne so glad you've brought up arm pain. Mine has been SO tender and painful too, especially on this second cycle despite them using a different vein.
I'm in week 3 now of cycle 2 and arm pain is just about gone, ready to be hit again Wednesday! I've got an appointment with my plastic surgeon tomorrow to discuss nipple/tattoo reconstruction!
My hair has fallen out completely now so I'm wearing headscarves and turbans. I don't know why, but I feel confident wearing these but I'm really hesitant to wear 'Sheila' (wig) so she's still sat on the side! Eyebrows and lashes still holding on!

Re: May chemo starters 2018

Hi Leanne I'm having third chemo on Friday and I've had the same with my hand and wrist from last chemo, it's a lot better now but was sore and tender as if I had hit it against a wall. Had it checked today when having bloods and all is fine. Last fec on Friday then start T so halfway now . Any one had All lymph nodes removed and how is your arm movement and pain xxx

Re: May chemo starters 2018

Hope your feeling better today Sarah!! 💕
Just been for bloods. Trouble getting blood again but got there in the end. My forearm has been very sore since my last chemo has anyone els experienced this???
I will let the oncologist know tomorrow and then chemo on Thursday. Hope it’s nothing and my veins are fine. Last thing I want now is a pic line to go on holiday in 3 weeks!! Won’t mind having it when I’m back for the last 3 cycles!!
Got my look good feel better session this afternoon. Looking forward to that.
Hope everyone doing ok today xx

So sorry to hear of your tearful emotions. This treatment is so difficult and sometimes what we are going through hits home suddenly. Just ride it through, have a cry and look at tomorrow as a new day xx

Re: May chemo starters 2018

@joanandbasilthedog I can recomment the Seasalt headbands. They're tubular when stretched out and cover the whole head effortless, with no need to fiddle with ties.
I bought quite a lot of head coverings, but these are by far my favourites as they're so versatile, airy, light and come in so many different styles.

Hello, ladies!
Hoping side effects have been minimal.

I've just finished my third bout of fec...halfway through!!!...docitaxol next.

I thought I'd feel positive and upbeat at reaching the halfway stage, but I appear to have spent most of the day bursting into tears quite randomly.
Wasn't prepared at all for the massive emotional swings today.

Re: May chemo starters 2018

I think my highlights caused probs as the hair was weaker than my natural hair.they recommend getting hair cut short but glad i didnt as at least i have short natural hair a number 8 although not alot at the top.not sure if it looks ok or not and keep thinking about wearing a bandana too. Got lgfb course in july so not for abit. Went to the toilet today after 2 days thank goodness as didnt want to end up in pain again for 2 weeks like cycle 2. Been taking 1 to 3 laxatives a day which has helped. My neuts went up to higher than before i started chemo so not sure if thats the manuka honey. Got 3 more injections but feel like i am getting back to normal now on day 6 cycle 3 as dont feel sick today. Hope everyones doing ok. Am using aloe vera on heat rash but had it 2 weeks now although it nearly went last night.x

Re: May chemo starters 2018

Oh Hets what a nightmare for you . Its that shall i phone or not scenario that when your head is not clear and you don’t want to bother but good job you did . Sending big hugs to all others as well , tropic hope you feeling less anxious xx its day 6 of second cycle and like others felt worse this time . Went to bed on thursday and have been feeling nausea since then . If i take the metoclopramide then i feel drowsy and spaced out ..Thankfully the the diarrhoea which was constant for last few weeks have stopped due to magic pill and they dialled back on The Docetaxel which i was intially scared about but they assured me was fine as my body needs to cope with the chemo . Hair .... well the wig is there making the dog bark but too hot to wear . I have short very thin ... grey hair left .... why did my expensive highlights fall out ? 😂 so covering with bandana which is not looking cool 😎. Hopefully get some tips on my lgfb course next week . We had quite an emotional day yesterday where my husband bless him felt teenagers could be doing more to help and he felt alone which broke my heart . There is no manual for going through this is there ? And teens like kids deal with things in their own way and will still be teenagers . Bit of an emotional roller coaster but we will get there . Keep going all ... i am dressed today ... progress indeed! 😊xx

Re: May chemo starters 2018

Hi,

i definitely feel more tired on this second cycle but trying for a longer walk today to clear the head. Also have to face washing my hair and know that lots more will come out..eek.

I agree that honey seemed to work for me on the last cycle so I put a spoon of Manuka honey in a smoothie or juice every day.

Sorry to hear about some of the infection issues...I hope you're doing much better now. I take my temperature way too much!😳

Stay strong ladies..we can do this!

Re: May chemo starters 2018

Thank you ladies!!!! @linda Corrine def keep an eye on it. I’m going home today 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻. Things are improving and I’m now on oral antibiotics. Cellulitis and non neutropenic sepsis (which I think means not about to kill me sepsis). But it is a bit of a lesson I guess. I didn’t feel particularly ill on Thursday night but I just took my temperature before I went to sleep which I always do. It was 37.2, so I waited 10 mins and it was 37.5. Over the next 30 mins it was 37.9 one minute and then popped back down to 37.2. I spoke to the chemo nurse and even she was a bit like ‘you probably should go in and get checked’ but it all felt a bit ‘will I, won’t i’. In the end I went in because I decided I wouldn’t sleep anyway!! So I know they say this but do always go and get checked and err on the side of caution. It’s a pain being in hospital but it is much better than the alternative! On the positive side I have met the most amazing array of women with incredible stories of their own. I’m not convinced I will be doing my 3rd cycle on Thursday, it feels as if my body needs a week’s rest, but I’m speaking to the oncologist on Tuesday.

Re: May chemo starters 2018

Sorry for radio silence. Like many here cycle 2 has been a lot worse with the tiredness, fog, headaches. Then on Thursday evening I took my temp before I went to sleep and it was 37.8. With some hesitation I called the emergency line and told to go to a&e. Bloods came back indicating infection/inflammation therefore admitted for 48 hours intravenous antibiotics/obs. Still here they’ve just taken bloods to see if I can go home today. Pretty crap, particularly as I have cycle 3 on Thursday! I had mastectomy with implant reconstruction before chemo and at the end of week 2 in 1st and now 2nd cycle it has become swollen and red (2nd worse than first) and they think that’s probably what spiked my temp. I suspect this is going to happen with each cycle now - i’ll just get home from this then I’m back in on Thursday for cycle 3! Staying positive when I can - have met some lovely old ladies in hospitals with amazing lives and stories to tell!!

Re: May chemo starters 2018

Hi all,

Sorry for being so quiet. It was a busy week with a port fitted, LGFB and chemo. Now on day 2 of cycle 2. For those going to LGFB I really enjoyed it..2 hours of fun and mainly light hearted chat for a change at hospital with a free goodie bag of the lotions and cosmetics donated. It definitely helped me as pretty rubbish with make up..hope anyone going has a good time. Friday was chemo day..took three attempts to get the needle in to the new port as bruised and swollen still so not entirely great. Ended up panicking in the evening as for some reason I couldn't swallow well and my heart rate was up so went to A&E at 11 till 2am..I was perfectly ok so felt like a fraud. Now going to concentrate on mindfulness and breathing techniques as sure it is all anxiety.

Today tired from the late night so relaxed, cooked and feel pretty good considering.

im doing cold cap but my hair is curly, thick and a big frizzy so has been clumping and coming out lots of the last week..decision time by next chemo really. As it is just a bit thin on top I've been wearing a bandana as a sort of wide headband..looks ok but we'll see how much stays.

Hope you're all having a good weekend and feeling ok.

As many have described - what I imagine was like a very bad hangover with swimmy head yeasterday. Today feeling so much better. Nausea from cycle 1 not made a reoccurrence- is the that due to your piloting Shi or the meds being taken??😊 Hopeful each day will enjoy the view from a window seat- looking forward to the Alps in week 3.

Had 3rd chemo yesterday.felt sick so took an as and when tablet which helped.thinking about fish finger sandwich for lunch.not sure how many more to go though as is 8 currently in total on rosco trial but if i come off it i will just have 1 of 2 drugs on trial begining with a d but at a higher dose than on trial but it would be discussed at the meeting.also would avoid another biopsy on trial after cycle 8 so i think its a no brainer.op is now after all chemo not 4 cycles.

Re: May chemo starters 2018

JemPD,
I already have my wig and I like it, maybe too hot to wear it recently though. I also don't want my wig to look like a wig if that makes sense.
It is distressing, feeling a bit down emotionally now that I feel more energised.
I have been for a walk today which has helped.
I have got some scarves etc but not sure I have the confidence to wear them yet.
Each stage needs time and encouragement.
